Giant Traveling Map
Giant Traveling Map
The Missouri Geographic Alliance houses three giant maps of Missouri, which are available to be borrowed for educational settings. Both were created with the intention to be walked on (while wearing clean socks.) The topographic map created in Missouri with funding from the Missouri GIS Advisory Council and Missouri 4-H measures 15 feet by 15 feet. The two State Giant Traveling Maps created and supported by National Geographic measure 17 feet by 21 feet.
These maps are fantastic tools to get youth and educators on the map and all over Missouri from the comfort of their gymnasium or classroom. Along with the map, you will receive an educational tool trunk. In the lessons tab underneath the Giant Traveling Map drop down, you will find example lesson plans created by National Geographic and Missouri educators. A list of what all you will receive with the map is found here.
Big Maps Rental Fee Change
Due to the loss in National Geographic Society funding, Big Map rental fees are changing. Beginning in 2019, non-profit organizations will be charged a flat fee of $125 to cover shipping (round-trip via FedEx) and handling.
Maps can still be picked-up and returned to our University of Missouri office for a handling fee of $25. For-profit organizations should contact the MGA for pricing information. Handling fees will be used to maintain the Big Maps and the variety of geography education tools included in the Big Map containers. Maps can continue to be checked out for a two-week period.
Educators in Boone and Cole counties are eligible, while funding allows, to have free access to the maps thanks to a donation from Missouri Credit Union. Please contact the MGA office for details.
All map rentals are contingent on the University of Missouri campus remaining open.
