Bio

Medeia Csoba DeHass is an Associate Professor at the Department of Geography at the University of Missouri and a Research Associate at the Center for Digital Heritage and Geospatial Information at the University of South Florida Libraries. She teaches courses on decolonizing research methodologies, digital heritage preservation, and collaborating with Indigenous communities. She earned M.A. degrees in history and cultural anthropology from the Eötvös Loránd University of Budapest and a Ph.D. in anthropology from the University of Alaska Fairbanks. Prior to joining the University of Missouri, Dr. Csoba DeHass was a National Science Foundation postdoctoral fellow at the Native American Studies Program and the Institute of Arctic Studies at Dartmouth College, an Assistant Professor of Anthropology and Alaska Native Studies at the University of Alaska Anchorage, an Associate Professor at Des Moines Area Community College, and a Visiting Scientist at the Arctic Remote and Cold Territories Interdisciplinary Center (ARCTICenter) at the University of Northern Iowa.

She is the recipient of an NSF CAREER award that explores Indigenous perceptions and use of digital 3D technologies in preserving ancestral Alaska Native heritage in the Bering Strait region. She is also lead PI on a collaborative NSF award that brings together a team of 14 researchers, Indigenous community members, and 3D heritage preservation professionals to investigate best practices and ethical use of 3D technologies for the preservation and management of Indigenous ancestral heritage.

Dr. Csoba DeHass’ 3D Lab at the Department of Geography provides students with opportunities to gain hands-on experience with 3D technologies for heritage preservation.
