Welcome to Week 2! Hope you all are settling into your classes and finding a rhythm as the semester gets underway.
One of the things you may have noticed I keep touting is GTU/Geography Club—this student organization is the ideal way to get involved in things geographical in the department, not just through events and service opportunities, or in meeting your peers and interacting with faculty and staff, but also in having a more active role in the departmental community. The first meeting of Geography Club/GTU is coming up: September 15, 4-5pm, Stewart Hall room 216. Drop Club President Sarah Frost (sefxb6@mail.missouri.edu) an email if you have any questions before then, or can’t make the meeting but want to be involved.
One of the things the Geography Club will be helping with this semester is the department’s Geography Camp Out at Arrow Rock State Park on Friday, September 24 through Saturday, September 25. It only costs you $2! That gets you a place to pitch your tent, a two-day guided interpretation of the Arrow Rock region, a campfire dinner with s’mores on Friday, and a boxed lunch after final presentations on Saturday. All for two bucks? Yup! Email Be on the lookout for a Qualtrics survey in your email inbox soon! In the meantime, if you have any questions or need additional information, email Dr. Doug Hurt (hurtd@missouri.edu).
A lot of you are probably thinking about jobs, and if you’re not, you likely will be in the near future. For those of you interested in a career in GIS and spatial-data management/analysis, one of the resources you have available is the MSDIS Jobs Page, which features up-to-date postings of geospatial jobs in Missouri and bordering states: https://msdis.missouri.edu/community/jobs.html. Even if you’re not actively on the job market, periodically checking out the jobs available in the region can give you a sense of the kinds of jobs available, the salary ranges, and qualifications for the position. Completing an internship with MSDIS (GEOG 4945) will get you acquainted with the employers who are doing the hiring. That way, when you are on the job market, you have an entire network to pull from.
In the meantime, keep rockin’, keep rollin’, and don’t let nothin’ slow ya down!
M-I-Z!
G-E-O!
