The Missouri Geographic Alliance Geospatial Information Science Workshop, designed for K-12 educators, will be held July 26-31 at Lincoln University in Jefferson City. Space is limited, with only 20 slots for classroom teachers.

The event features workshop topics and hands-on learning with:

  • Small Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (drones)
  • Global Positioning Systems (GPS)
  • Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
  • Remote Sensing

The cost of the six-day conference is covered in part by the U.S. Department of Agriculture – National Institute of Food and Agriculture. Trip expenses include ground transportation, room and board (on the Lincoln University campus) and a stipend, to be awarded after completion of the workshop. Participants earn two continuing education credits.

The workshop is a joint effort between the University of Missouri and Lincoln University. University faculty from geography, geology, and the geospatial sciences work with educators to develop classroom lessons and activities that incorporate geospatial information into their curriculum. This is the third summer for the workshop, which has reached more than 30 educators from multiple disciplines and who teach various grade levels.

Participants have commented positively about the experience, stating they enjoyed the hands-on experience and real-world applications, which they can take back into their classrooms. Commenters also said the experience was “engaging,” and “fun,” gave them a “greater understanding of GIS and GPS” and provided a better insight on how to share the information.
