Departmental Honors Requirements
Prerequisites
- declared Geography major
- Senior academic standing (completion of at least 90 hours) during the semester Geography 4996H or Geography 4997H is taken
- 3.3 or above cumulative GPA (at the time of application and maintained until graduation)
- 3.5 or above GPA in MU Geography courses
- students are not required to be enrolled in the Honors College to participate in the departmental honors program
Action to take in the semester prior to pursuing departmental honors
- interested student submits a written proposal for a substantial project involving original research to a tenured, tenure-track, or NTT faculty member working in the student’s area of interest
- the faculty mentor must agree to supervise the project…faculty members are not obligated to supervise honors projects
- student provides the Director of Undergraduate Studies hard copies of the proposal and an unofficial transcript, after receiving approval from the supervising professor
To receive departmental honors
- register for and successfully complete three-credit hours of Geography 4996H or Geography 4997H (Honors: Geography)
- before a Geography 4996H or Geography 4997H grade is submitted, the student must present their research to the department (either through a short colloquium, research poster display, or alternate method approved by the supervising professor)
