What's New @MizzouGeog? 9.8.20
Well, folks, here’s a rarity to pencil in on your scorecard: a Monday morning email on a Tuesday! I hope you all had a great Labor Day weekend and got some time to enjoy the warm weather and sunshine ahead of the storms set to roll in today. Given that it’s a short week, we’ve got a short (but important!) update:
Mark your calendars! Coming up quick! The first meeting of the Geography Club/GTU will be tomorrow, September 9 at 4:15pm in Stewart 216 and also on Zoom. If you want to be in on determining the social and service events this semester, please make sure to attend this meeting, or if you cannot make it, get in touch with GTU/Geography Club President Jefferson Daubitz (jldnpv@mail.missouri.edu). I especially encourage all new majors and transfer students to consider GTU/Geography Club. Be there, or be square!
Under the fine leadership of Tom Vought, the Missouri Spatial Data Information Service will be awarded a subcontract from the Missouri State Emergency Management Agency to serve out FEMA-funded flood risk data on a platform that can connect to the internet without sacrificing the accuracy of the data layers and response times for the data to load. The data consists of 1M Raster sets including Depth Grids, Water Surface Elevation Grids, Freeboard Grids that will eventually be developed statewide. The creation of this platform will allow for the data to be easily accessible to the community Floodplain Administrators, Emergency Managers as well as community officials and will assist with planning and development of engineered and non-engineered solutions to manage flooding risk within the State of Missouri. What a fine example of how MU Geography, and MSDIS in particular, serves the State of Missouri with geographical expertise. Congratulations, Tom!
Finally, a couple of potential internship opportunities for undergrads! Dan S. Rose, manager of Geospatial Services with the City of Columbia, reports that the City of Columbia has multiple openings for GIS Interns. Details can be found here: https://www.gocomojobs.com/postings/22353. The posting closes on Tuesday, Sept. 15th. Garry Gunder, MU Geography Class of 2002, tells us that the FBI has opened the annual application processes for the FY2021 Honors Internship Program and the Collegiate Hiring Initiative (CHI). These postings will close on September 30 and cover positions in all field offices and headquarters locations. For more information and application, please go to www.fbijobs.gov.
Do you have news to share? Please email me (larsens@missouri.edu) and it will come out the following Monday. In the meantime, be well, everyone, and here’s to a great week 3!
