What's New @MizzouGeog? 11.30.20

Good morning, geographers!

I have a couple things for you this week as we reconvene virtually to finish the fall semester. First, remember that while no face-to-face classes will be held, campus is open and most university facilities are available for your use. The lab and library in Stewart Hall will be open from 7:30am to 4:00pm weekdays.

Second, undergraduate students Sarah Frost and Grace Martinez will be giving a departmental colloquium on “Indigenous Counter Mapping through Art and Oral Traditions” this Friday, December 4th at 1pm. As part of Dr. Mark Palmer’s Native American Geographies class, these two students have done a lot of great work this semester exploring Kiowa life, history, and culture within the Kiowa-Comanche-Apache reservation from a canvas map drawn in the 1890s.To join, click here at the time of the event!

Come hear James Floyd, former Chief of the Mvscogee (Creek) Nation, discuss the significance of the 2020 Supreme Court ruling in McGirt v. Oklahoma, which has already been called one of the most important Indian law cases in recent history. This Tuesday at 3PM. Click here at time of event to join!

Second, don’t forget to come to the virtual meeting of the Heidelberg Research Council today at 4pm. Prizes will be raffled off and there will be surprise guests, including some alums who graduated more than a little while ago—oh, and a convocation of the micronation of Humboldtia (named in honor of famed geographer Alexander von Humboldt) by Bob Boon. Be there, or be square!
