What's New @MizzouGeog? 11.16.20

New class offered! GEOG 4904 Mapping Mizzou, Spring 2021.

Good morning, geographers!

I have some real exciting news to share with you all—at the West Lakes Division of the American Association of Geographers Annual Meeting last week held virtually at Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville, Mizzou’s own Seth Kannarr won first place in the Masters/Doctoral Poster Competition, and Melissa Church won third place in the Master’s Paper Competition. The title of Seth’s poster was “States Rated: An Index for Natural Hazard Vulnerability,” and the title of Melissa’s paper was “A case study of art and historic tourism in Bisbee, Arizona.” This is an extraordinary showing, and it goes to show you the quality of research our graduate students are doing. Please join me in congratulations Seth and Melissa on this well-deserved recognition.

And this Thursday, November 19, Rafa Gonzalez will be presenting at the Southwest AAG Annual Meeting. The title of his talk is “Exploring the Use of Story Map in the Indigenous Video Game Mulaka.” Let’s wish him luck!

By now, you all have heard that we will not be returning for in-person classes after Thanksgiving Break. But we will still be “here” as a geography community! To that end, I am pleased to announce the first virtual meeting of the Heidelberg Research Council at 4pm on Monday, November 30. Bring your own beverage and appetizers, and join us on Zoom at 4pm for a good time with geography friends and faculty, and a few surprises you won’t want to miss! Click here at the time of event to join the HRC!

Are you looking for an exciting upper division course next spring? Join me and Claire Syler (Assistant Professor of Theater) in GEOG 4904 Mapping Mizzou (flyer attached), which is a Diversity Intensive course that engages your own sense of place on the Mizzou campus as we explore the geographies of marginalized groups and create a culminating public tour. The class meets Mondays and Wednesdays at 9:30 – 10:45 in Studio 4. Email me if you have any questions!

Please note that the Geography Department Office will be closed for the week of Thanksgiving Break, from Monday, November 23 – Friday, November 27.

M-I-Z!

G-E-O!
