Geog 2720: The City

#Exploretheworld this semester @Mizzou!

With more than 80 percent of the U.S. population living in cities and their surrounding suburbs, cities play a central role in nearly every current challenge facing the U.S. today. In this course, we will study the spatial evolution of American cities, and explore how these spatial patterns impact our economy, environment, lifestyle, and health. We will tackle questions such as:

1.        How have American cities changed in the last 200 years?

2.        What role have government policies played in shaping and reshaping cities?

3.        How did the suburbs become the most common urban landscape, and what are the advantages and disadvantages of suburban life?

4.        Why did inner city ghettos form, and why are they so hard to eliminate?

5.        What strategies are cities pursuing to redevelop the inner city? What has worked, and what has been less successful?

6.        What are some of the emerging trends in city and neighborhood design?
