What's New @MizzouGeog? 3.15.21

Soren Larsen

Good morning, everyone!

We have a big event coming up next Monday, March 22 at 4PM and all geography students are invited. In honor of geography professor and chair emeritus Dr. Christopher “Kit” Salter, we will be installing a “fancy-schmancy” map board on the second floor of Stewart Hall in the alcove near the kitchenette, a space that will be officially dedicated as the Kit Salter Studio. You will be able to post pictures of all the cool places you have been on the board, along with a short little description of your experiences there. This is an old-school “story map” that will allow all of us to share the stories of our travels around the world, both pre-pandemic, and post-pandemic!

What do you need to do?

  1. By this Friday, March 19, send a picture of a cool place with a short description to Wheeler Ambassador Abby Hunt: amh8xq@mail.missouri.edu. She will print your picture and description off in preparation for posting.
  2. By this Friday, March 19, fill out this Google Poll indicating whether you would like to be in person or via Zoom: https://forms.gle/EGFkT9rnCkSAH33QA
  3. Wait for a reply and attend the Dedication of the Salter Studio in person or via Zoom next Monday: https://umsystem.zoom.us/j/94718355763.

This map board will be the perfect thing for us as we all start to gear up to get out of this pandemic and get back out there exploring our world!!!

In other important departmental news…

Look in your inbox for an invitation to Mizzou’s Beta Xi chapter of Gamma Theta Upsilon (GTU), the international Geography honor society.  Graduate and undergraduate students who meet GTU’s academic qualifications (www.gammathetaupsilon.org) have until Tuesday, April 6 to complete their membership application.  For more information or questions, e-mail Dr. Hurt at hurtd@missouri.edu.

Calling all undergraduate geography majors! Applications for the Jesse H. Wheeler Undergraduate Student Ambassadors Program are now open. The application deadline is March 18, 2021. Up to two students will be paid to represent the department, plan Geography events, and spread the awesomeness that is Geography to your peers during the Fall 2021 semester. Plus, you get a snazzy MU Geography polo. I have attached two Word documents: an application form and a prospectus/job description (in particular note the “duties” and “application” sections). If you have questions, please e-mail Dr. Doug Hurt at hurtd@missouri.edu.

M-I-Z!

G-E-O!
